AI Prompting Basics: How to Ask Better Questions

Written by CJ Teeter

Overview

Shred works best with short, direct prompts. You do not need to include personas (ex: “You are an AEC Pursuit Strategist”), strict guidelines (output format, structure, etc.), or examples of “do’s” or “don’ts” for it to work.

Use this simple formula to successfully prompt Shred.

[Action] + [Context] + [Details]

  • Action → a clear directive verb

    • Examples: Find, Write, Describe, Provide, Generate

  • Context → the focus of the task (must be either super specific or deliberately open)

    • Specific: Project Atlanta Elementary School, Team member Sarah Smith

    • Open: a project, some projects, a few team members

    • ❌ Avoid “all projects” or “everything,” since that overwhelms the scope

  • Details → constraints, framing, or conditions

    • Examples: in the healthcare marketing sector, within 200 words, using a friendly tone, with bullet points, by the end of Q3

💡 Pro Tips:

  • Add context (client, project type, date range).

  • Break big requests into smaller prompts.

Use follow-ups instead of rewriting your query from scratch.
